musical-youth-picMusical Youth was formed in 1979, consisting of two sets of brothers and Frederick Waite, formerly of The Techniques, but he was later replaced as lead singer by Dennis Seaton.  The group are a UK/Jamaican reggae band, with a pop sound that took the mainstream by storm.  Most notable is their 1982 Grammy nominee, “Pass the Dutchie”, which refers to a type of cooked cannabis, as well as undertones that discussed the poverty and struggles of many people.  The band was formed at Duddeston Manor, in Birningham, England.  They received Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1984 as well.

The song “Pass the Dutchie” was based on the song “Pass The Kouchie” (a song about marijuana, also known as, cannabis), by the Mighty Diamonds.

Musical Youth members include:  Dennis Seaton, Michael and Kelvin Grant, Freddie “Junior” Waite, and Patrick Waite.

eddy-grant-picEdmond Montague Grant, was born March 5, 1948 in Paisance, Guyana, while it was still a British colony.  Eddy is considered a British Reggae Musician, since his parents relocated him to London as a child.  His first number one hit, “Baby Come Back”, was in 1968, but his two biggest came in the early 1980’s, with “I Don’t Wanna Dance”, and my personal favorite, “Electric Avenue”.  As a kid, I used to watch this video, with the TV turned up loud(no surround sound back then of course) and imagine myself rockin down the streets on my own motorcycle.  Both of these singles made it to the UK top 5, with “I Don’t Wanna Dance” making it’s way to number one in September and October 1982.  Eddy Grant is still touring at the present time, even though he’s no spring chicken anymore!!  Cheers Eddy!!
